The Tree of Life as a 3D audio path: sacred geometry in spatial sound
The Tree of Life is a diagram of ten spheres, the sephiroth, joined by 22 paths. Used as a map in 3D space, it gives a sound a meaningful route to travel around the listener. Instead of panning left and right at random, a sound can descend the Lightning Flash from Kether to Malkuth, climb the Middle Pillar, or circle the pillars of Severity and Mercy.
What is the Tree of Life?
The Tree of Life (Etz Chaim) is the central diagram of Kabbalah and of the Western esoteric traditions that grew from it. Its ten sephiroth are Kether, Chokmah, Binah, Chesed, Geburah, Tiphareth, Netzach, Hod, Yesod and Malkuth, with the hidden eleventh, Da'at, across the Abyss. They stand in three pillars: Severity on the left, Mercy on the right and the Middle Pillar of balance.
What is the Lightning Flash?
The Lightning Flash is the zig-zag path through the sephiroth in their numbered order, from Kether down to Malkuth. It describes the descent of creative force into the world. Its reverse, climbing from Malkuth to Kether, is the path of return used in meditation.
What is Metatron's Cube?
Metatron's Cube is a figure of 13 circles joined by straight lines. It contains the outlines of the five Platonic solids, so it is often used as a symbol of the geometry underlying creation.
How does sacred geometry become spatial audio?
A spatializer places a sound at a point in 3D around the listener and tells each ear how it would hear a sound from there: the small time and level difference between the ears and the way the head and ears colour sound from above, below and behind. This is binaural spatial audio, and like binaural beats it works best on headphones. When the points come from the Tree of Life, the listener's body becomes the Tree: Kether above the head, Malkuth at the feet, Tiphareth at the heart.
Uses in music and meditation
- Producers move pads, vocals and effects along a path in time with the track, for movement that has a shape instead of an LFO wobble.
- Sound healers guide attention through the body, for example down the Middle Pillar, slowly, with a station held at each sephirah.
Divine Spatializer
Divine Spatializer is a binaural 3D spatializer plug-in (VST3, AU, Standalone for macOS) that moves sound along the Tree of Life and Metatron's Cube. It has routes such as the Lightning Flash, a meditation timeline that steps through the stations in tempo, colour controls (resonance, tilt, space, sephirah tone and afterglow), and views in 3D, flat, Metatron and motion. 33 €, free for 14 days. See the Divine Spatializer manual.
