Key features

  • Length 1.05 to 2.20 m: drag the bell or pick a note
  • Eucalyptus, bamboo, agave or glass, each with its own bore and ring
  • Drone, MIDI gate, or MIDI key for psy basslines
  • Mouth vowel sweep and tempo-synced wah
  • Hum and growl inside the instrument, TOOT overblow

What is Veil?

Veil is a physically modelled didgeridoo instrument plug-in from Sacred Audio, coming soon for macOS (VST3, AU and Standalone). A didgeridoo built from a lip buzz and the bore's own resonances. Nothing is sampled: choose the length and the wood, and the length sets the note.

Veil builds the drone the way the instrument does: a lip buzz locked to the bore's first resonance, ringing through resonators shaped by the wood. Nothing is sampled. 1.45 m plays E2, 82 Hz.

Pick eucalyptus, bamboo, agave or glass. Sweep the mouth from u to i, hum a voice into it, and play rolling psy basslines from MIDI.

The length sets the note

Drag the bell and the pitch follows the bore. Natural tuning, A=440 or A=432.

Breath and voice

Lip pressure, circular breathing and breath noise. Hum from −12 to +24 semitones and the difference tones are real.

Built for the floor

MIDI key mode turns Veil into a bass instrument, with glide from 1 to 500 ms and rhythm patterns synced to your song.

How it's built

The modelling, the research and the choices behind Veil.

How is Veil built?

A lip buzz locked to the bore's first resonance, with voice and breath added, rings through eight modal resonators per channel. Their ratios and damping come from the wood or material you choose. Two vowel formants and a gentle saturation follow; the saturation is what makes the hummed difference tones.

The note follows the length: f = c / (4 · L · k), with k = 0.72 for a flared bore. 1.45 m plays E2, about 82 Hz.

How was it voiced?

Against two real didgeridoo recordings: harmonic-to-noise around 5 dB, odd harmonics about 19 dB over the even ones, band energy within a few dB, and a natural pitch wobble of 12 to 20 cents.
